We have evolved a great deal here at Ageless Remedies. Right now our goal to be the best medspa in the Athens area is our focus. This has always been inferred but experience provides better ways of trying to reach this.

One of the things I have always preached is to make your feelings known (to the right person...the owner). At one time we had an aesthetician who was so unhappy in life she gave the clients extra uncharged treatments and also bad-mouthed us as owners. This become apparent when the clients dealt with any other staff. Keep in mind that just because an aesthetician gives you one story, this may not be true. Some people are never happy; even when they are making the highest salary of the staff. If I had an experience, where the aesthetician was always having a "pity-party", I would be concerned. First of all...the esthetic service is supposed to bring you "up", be about you and your needs. Nobody needs to feel uneasy during a treatment.

If you are anxious that you did not get all parts of the service, please ask to talk to an owner. Remember...that we are not in the treatment room and do not know everything that goes on. Also unless we are aware there is a concern...we cannot address it. Now, as much as we want your service and look forward to you coming to us, we cannot make our services please everyone or give things free or we would not be in business. Also if you can get a service cheaper, we usually advise you to take advantage of that. We do continually provide an array of specials that are available for you to try services at cheaper prices.

Right now we have two additional part-time aestheticians that have brought with them superior training and great personalities. Elenora works Tuesday and Wednesday and Dawn is here Thursday though Saturday. They are highly motivated and conscious of providing top-notch treatment.

We respect our aestheticians and staff, and ask that you show them the same courteous attitude. One of the few free things we can give to each other at a time that is difficult economically is to smile and be openly cheerful. Pass it on, and you will feel a lot better when you do. I speak from experience. The days I am not up to par, I force myself to smile more and when I do, I find it makes me feel better. Do you know that there was a university study where psychologists had depressed people (on medication) keep their regimen but added periods of continually smiling? These people were able to drop their medication because the result of this habit of smiling activated a certain area of their brain. Now I am not advocating that anybody reduces or stops medication without a doctor's approval, but I am just passing on something I learned from Anthony Robbins, a highly sought after motivational speaker.

I have also learned from a podcast interview that one psychologist studying early life experiences to predict anti-social behavior found that most serial killers came from families that provided very rigid, anti-fun environments even if there was no history of child abuse. This psychologist was so impressed that he has a business which promotes "fun" as part of the business routine and parenting. Needless to say, I wish I had the chance to be part of his staff. But...at least I have another thing in my repetoire which can be used to project a better attitude personally.

As you age you start to notice your friends' facial skin, some look more refreshed; others...you can't put your finger on what is different. You may question them on the difference you notice and find silence. That may be that they don't want to give up the place that helped make them that way.

Ageless Remedies here in Athens, will give you the answers. At 67, I am glad to share with clients what I have done to look younger. There is a lot I have learned since being in this business that I am glad to share.

I am still working on sundamage from being an avid sun-worshipper in my teenage years. No one ever shared with me the value of sunblock, hats, times to be in the sun,etc.

Besides taking advantage of what I have time to share, I have felt so good when I notice the change in clients' skin for the positive. When the client looks years younger, the skin reflects it and so does the personality.

In winter, many people put away their sunscreen. Actually, humans need more sunscreen during this season. It is true that the areas of exposed body surface may be less, but the face and hands and lips need protection as this is the time of the year when the sun's ray are most intense. UVA rays,which do not cause burning, do damage below the skin's surface leading to wrinkles, brown spots and skin cancers. Take a look at people who spend a lot of time in outdoor spots but neglect sun protection. They have more signs of premature aging with wrinkles and brown spots. Be sure you have a sunblock of at least 15 SPF it arms you with both UVA and UVB blockage.

Snow reflects sun worse than water so if you live in an area of snow accumulation or are a sports enthusiast on the slopes, don't forget to have and reapply sunblock. Actually sunblock is necessary for every season.

We also now know that if you really want protection, you need sunblock even in the house, more if you are exposed to sun through a number of windows. Windows let UVA rays in and depending on what side you occupy in the car you will notice that pigmentation or wrinkles predominate on the side you sit on. Besides sunblock with moisturizer, we have lasers and products that reduce sundamage.

Also it is necessary to take note of the part increased elevation plays in sun exposure. For every 1000 feet aboves sea-level, UVA damage increases 2%. Flying of course puts you way up in altitude, so one should slather on the sunblock (30 SPF) before you leave the gate.

This is a perfect time of the year to work on the pigmentation that has come to the surface of your skin which is the result of sun damage. Since I did a blog earlier on this same material, I have had questions which have led to this blog which explains some of the procedures in greater detail.

Here in Athens we have several ways to reduce or sometimes even eliminate those pigmentation spots that make you feel so self conscious. On the product side we have the Nuderm Obagi kit paired with tretinoin (Retina A) that is used in the morning and night to clear your complexion. This is a prescription grade product that works really well if you are committed to following the regimen.
On the treatment side we have chemical peels, microderms or a paring of the two in a chemibrasion series. This saves you the home regimen that the Nuderm kit requires.

We also offer the Alexandrite setting on the laser which will usually work even faster.

The best thing to do is to make a free consultation appointment with one of our med aestheticians who will look at your medical history and discuss your options. She, (the med-aesthetician), will recommend an additional consult with the nurse practitioner who does the service and will advise you on the treatment and make sure that you are a candidate.

This is a perfect time of the year to work on the pigmentation that has come to the surface of your skin which is the result of sun damage.

Here in Athens we have the aggressive, quicker and more expensive route which includes series of the Cynosure Laser with the Alexandrite setting. This laser will remove your pigmentation over a series of treatments very quickly.

This is not painfree, however there is a air cooler you control to make he heating less evident. An added bonus will be some tightening of the skin.

Come in and see me when I am in Athens and I will show you a test brown spot I had done on my hand that 1/2 of a brown spot turned skin color with one treatment from the Alexandrite setting.

If you want a less expensive route...you can combine microderms with chemical peels...We call these Chemibrasions and you purchase a series. Revision also has a Vitamin C lotion to aid in protecting the skin from the sun.

To help you look your best for the holidays we have introduced the longest "Call to Action" for the entire month of November. Botox will be $10.99 a unit with a minimum of 20 units. Be sure to check the website or call the store for the injector's schedule.

Last Tuesday, our Revision Vendor came to the store and announced the introduction of a new product. This product is only going to be started in certain cities. Lucky for us...the Atlanta area is one and since we have a store in Duluth, we can get it for Athens.

This product is a hand-cream for night use. The reason it is recommended for night use only is to preserve the cream on your hands. During the day with the consistent cleansing of hands, too much of the cream would have to be used.

The great news about this product is that it (after several weeks) will plump up the hands due to the addition of fat-cells and will also lighten pigmented spots. The Agekesss Face: New Product Line

To the readership: First of all, I would like to explain why it has been so long since I have blogged…At the end of July I slipped on a wet floor at home and fractured my pelvic bone in two places. The good news is the injury did not require surgery, but it kept me at home unable to drive and my main priority was just making it through each day with the in-home PT, the pain and the initial difficulty of even making it out of bed.

This became my main focus, and the blogs went into a stop-mode with my husband having to travel to our two sites daily.

I am finally able to drive, but still in a lot of pain, but back to coming into the business for short periods of time, so…I am starting back to blogging.

The news here now is that we have brought in Revision products. We started with Nectifirm; and I learned a hard lesson…with the injury. Never stop your skin care if you can. GETTING RID OF FEAR OF INJECTABLES!

In my years of having Ageless Remedies, I have had several clients cite fear of injectables, whether it is Botox (TM) or Juvederm(TM).

One of the things I want to talk about is understanding that fear and how you can deal with your anxiety.

The first and foremost person you should address the fear with is the injector. We have excellently trained and experienced Nurse Practitioners. Our Nurse Practitioner can help you feel better about the process and the amount of discomfort you can expect.

Often we immediately relate to the pain and discomfort of other shots we have experienced in the past. We think of a large needle and syringe and pain in the area and redness is foremost in our minds.

Botox is applied with a small needle and a small syringe. There is rarely pain, but you can have topical anesthetic applied if you want to take no chance. I would compare it to a pin prick and I have rarely experienced any pain for this procedure.

Juvederm is a little more of an experience; but again there are dental blocks available, topical anesthethics and then Juvederm XC is the product with the lidocaine in the syringe. You can chose to go with both the topical and dental blocks and the XC. Of course pain is a personal thing, some people are more sensitive than others, but most people are pleasantly surprised with their tolerance.

New Results with Latisse and Nectifirm Update

By this time-with Brooke Shield's TV commercial and my blog on Latisse, (if you have seen it), you are aware that Latisse is the only product approved by the FDA for the regeneration of eyelashes.

Our Nurse Practitioner is on maintenance with Latisse. She looks so different with a whole new look framing her eyes. If you come into our Sugarloaf location you can see her picture on the counter.

All our users have been highly satisfied. I wish I could use Latisse myself, but with glaucoma, glaucoma drops, and drops for dryness; I am not a candidate. When I want more predominant Eyelashes I use Blink which forms tubes around the eyelash and cleans off with water.

Nectifirm is still going well and it has such a reasonable price. The first jar (using a dime-size amount) twice a day lasts two months and then you use a jar for each of the next four months. I am on maintenance now and use it at night only. Nectifirm enhances collagen and elastin...firming the neck and has ingredients to dissolve fat.

I personally love the silken feel of the cream. This is a wonderful alternative to plastic surgery and is a great price. When you see the results you will throw away your turtlenecks and use less of your scarves.

How to Help Us Work Better For You

Our goal is to stay profitable and to have satisfied clients; meeting their needs and being a source of education and options.

One thing that helps us make necessary changes is customer imput. Obviously we filter out the imposible, the suggestions that are come from people who are never satisified and would not be happy without a miracle. We research the references of the people we hire and are very selective in the people we choose. We also try to provide training that is lacking and continual education.

One of the things we cannot do is record what is occurring in the treatment room. If you have and incident that you believe should not have happened, experienced a harried technician or did not get want you came here knowing that your encounter was not positive; we need to hear about it.

Talk to the manager or the owner about your experience. We can think that all is well and suddenly we discover a problem. We prefer to address a situation before it becomes a habit, if the situation is not something that is in our protocols or is not something that should have occurred. We are the ones that can change the situation, but only if we know about the experience. Sometimes if you have expected a more relaxing "spa" experience, we may suggest another spa so that you can find that soothing experience.

Our treatments by protocol are result oriented. Our aestheticians should explain anything that you are having done for the first time, or how the treatment is different.

Our aestheticians should (in consults) provide you with several different options and give you suggestions on how to maintain your skin (after examining) your skin.

You should also be given pre-and post care on your treatments. If you do not receive these, please let us know. We cannot change inadequacies, if we are unaware that they exist. If we cannot help you, we will send you the place that can meet your needs. We also appreciate positive comments. They go a long way in making our day.

Here are a few tips: The FDA is working on banning Sun Protection numbering from products. The reason is that the number is misleading. A sun-block rating of 75 can provide you with a false security. Actually, if you use the right products and are more concerned with the ingredients, you only need a sun-block of 30. This gives you a blockage of 97-98% ; so why spend the extra money. There is also a lot of concern over the chemical sunscreens as it still is not sure about the absorption safety going into the skin....the toxicity factor.

Next, you should be more concerned with the ingredients. Physical ingredients...the % of Titanium Dioxide and Zinc Oxide which are minerals naturally occurring in the earth is a better indicator of sun protection. You need a 6% concentration of one of these to have full spectrum protection...UVA and UVB.

You can use a Sunblock and use it enough to not burn, but still get interior damage which will later show up as pigmented areas or pre-cancerous growths. Using Anti-oxidant serums (which we have in several concentrations and combinations) along with eating foods high in Vitamin C, and wearing thick-weave dark clothing and hats offer added protection. Vitamin C in our Skinceuticals brand travels down to the lower skin levels helping to prevent premature aging. The serums should be used in addition and previous to adding sun protection.

Add to your vitamin D (as sunblock breaks down D) and use adequate amounts of sun protection (a shot glass full) of sunblock to each arm and each leg, one for the front of the upper body, one for the back, almost one for the face and chest. Remember to reapply every two to three hours or more if you are in the water; and if you are toweling off. Our Serum 20 with 20% Vitamin C (AOX) has the most protection as once it is absorbed it stays in the skin; cannot be rubbed off or washed off. It has a half-life of four days which means that you have less protection the next day and after four days no interior protection. For best results use daily (use as directed).

Obviously, we can't avoid the sun, but we should limit our exposure to less heated times of the day, (before 10 and after 4 in the afternoon).

All sunscreens protect more against burning (UVB) rather than (UVA) so the best thing is to use education to protect your skin and stave off both premature aging, dehydration and cancerous growths. Many women tend to be very religious about sun protection on their faces, but neglect the rest of their body. This leaves an area for cancerous lesions to develop.

Don't forget that glass does not protect from UVA damage so a UVA protector is vital to prevent those wrinkles and heavier parentheses. You can cut down on some of that damage with a physical sunscreen and adding some of those screens that are sold to put on the window.

Last year I wore a lot of white hats and cover-ups on the boat...this year I will be switching to dark, heavy weave or a couple outfits from Solumbra.com which offer some light khaki colored clothing with a SPF rating of 30.

When my son and daughter in law come to enjoy the lake, sun and boat, I will be spending more time (safety-wise and enjoyment-wise) with the grandchildren indoors. Enjoy the sun safely...Joy (a former sun-worshipper)

How many of you have drawers of unused skin creams that you have used for a short while and then lost interest, and they have piled up and expired?

When I was in the drugstore the other day I was taking in all the products that "supposedly" work on wrinkles or rejuvenate the skin. I was thinking that this environment at Ageless is such a plus. First of all, you can walk into the Spa and immediately get someone to answer a question about a product. Our people are constantly be educated and urged to educate themselves.

Did you know that there is a difference in Retina A and Retinol? Retina A is a prescription drug. An over-the-counter product may have all of the words you know are anti-aging, however due to FDA standards, they cannot have the concentration or trade marked product that are on our counters. The percentage of the product may also be lower. One of our Obagi products that contains Retina A is Tretinoin. This like most of our other products comes in different concentrations and is a prescription product. Retina A is a vitamin A derivative and is a good wrinkle reducer (not for really deep-set wrinkles).

Some products advertised as Vitamin A cannot legitimately claim that they reduce wrinkles.

Even with us, if you have very sensitive skin, a lower concentration of Tretinoin may please you and your skin. The product can still do what it proclaims but at a slower rate than Tretinoin at a higher concentration. Our aestheticians will be glad to point this out.

We all (every once in awhile) fall for the product that promises "miracles" but stay educated, be educated and wise about your purchases and take advantage of our consults that in combination with our skin treatments can make your skin close or better to its former state. Come in and see us.

Remember too, that even with our products, if you want rejuvenation and and have not led a healthy lifestyle, one without adequate sunprotection, or if you have auto-immune diseases, there is a limit on what you can use/or how long it will take. A young woman who has used botox as soon as she is aware of her deep set frown lines, may stave off how often she has to have botox, or the amount she has to use.

We at Ageless are really excited about a new offering from Allergan which provides extra comfort in clients who come for dermal injections in the lips, nasolabial folds (parenthesis) or other lines of the face. JUVÉDERM(R) XC, is an FDA approved product which affords clients less pain due to the lidocaine - which is part of the formulation.

Two weeks ago I got to be the "guinea pig"...quite willing by the way... to undergo and compare the difference between the previous way of numbing for JUVÉDERM(R) and the XC. XC stands for extra comfort.

In an earlier blog, I had mentioned that I had been trying out a new neck cream that promised a tightening of the neck. I did not want to give the name until I knew it worked and that we would be carrying it.

Well, guess what? I see a difference but it is not overnight. Just like other products we offer;it takes place over time. I have been quite excited about it and now we have it. We have already had some calls about it since it hit the national evening news. On our Constant Contact E-Mail blast we included a link to the News' Clip.

As you start on your goals for better skin, I thought that I would mention that there is a myth out there that layering products with different SPF numbers will add more SPF protection; this is untrue. Yesterday before we left for work my husband had QVC on the screen, and they were promoting Clarisonic which I am sure everyone has heard of as one of Oprah's "favorite things". This is a handheld make-up cleansing system with a rotating head. The inventor-- a Dr. Ron or Rod was explaining all of the features. This brush features a nicely shaped holder, the charger and three trial sizes of cleanser. There is also a card that informs the purchaser that with registration, they can choose a second brush.

I was surprised that the price on QVC was the same as ours at Ageless and if you come into the store you do not have the shipping and handling charge.

The inventor mentioned that the brush cleans the face six times better than a washcloth, and besides removing make-up, also takes away much of the outer layer of dead skin. This process in turn makes skin products last longer,because less has to be used to penetrate.

The brush also keeps a thirty day charge and is waterproof so you can keep it in the shower. I have been using the brush for quite awhile and like the results, the fact that pleasing intermittent beeps alert you to move the brush to the next area of the face and that I will be able to take it with me without the charger when I travel. Any skin cleanser can be used so if you are on any skin-care system from us, you can use the cleanser that is the brand you already have. My husband keeps his personal one in the shower, but I am more excited with the travel ease.

Obagi already showing results

I mentioned in an earlier blog that the Obagi Condition and Enhance kit adds to Laser treatments and injections. Last week I went back to my Obagi system to enhance the Cynosure Elite Laser treatment of my pigment treatment. I have only been back to the system for five days, but I already can see my pigmented areas lightening more. The other benefit is that it will make any wrinkles less predominant as it penetrates into the dermis and transforms this at the cellular level, resulting in improved surface texture.

Some clients are purchasing the travel kit which is less (of an expense) and allows them to see results and then continue with the larger kit later. Since in prescriptive products, less is better than more, the end-product allows one to use less make-up. Happy Turkey Day...Joy

Spray Tanning Tips and Latisse Results

In an earlier blog, I mentioned tips for post care of a spray tan to make sure that your tan lasts. Today, I am going to offer pre-care for airbrush tanning: 1. Exfoliate completely and do not apply any lotions two hours prior to tanning. 2. Wear dark, loose fitting clothes and shoes (like flip-flops) to help prevent uneven color on your body. Do not exfoliate or use a loofah before your next tanning session.

Sun Damage Repair Continued

My last blog concerned sun damage prevention. Our specials this month have several procedures related to repairing sun damage.

You can have the Chemi-abrasion which includes a chemical peel and a microdermabrasion which is a $40 savings. We also have brought $99 microderms (Wednesday only).

Don't forget our Laser treatment for brown pigmented areas of the face (you need a consult with the Nurse Practioner for this) and our Obagi kit.

I recently (in our spa in Sugarloaf), had the second of three Laser treatments on my brown pigmented areas and I plan on returning to my Obagi kit to supplement this. The Obagi also retexturizes the skin; making lines less noticable. Repairing Sun Damage

Prevention is always cheaper and easier than treatment. This season (as the rain and the leaf color reminds us), we are not as involved in sunning as we have been. If you are one of the lucky ones who have not had much sun damage, a good physical sunscreen can be obtained here at Ageless and questions of ingredients can be answered.

Recently there has been a lot of media coverage on sun-bed tanning. If you have been a constant user, try our spray tan. You can with experience get a good facisimile of a sun tan without the damage. We have seen several clients who have used sun-beds constantly and have presented with damage that can not be reduced.

To make your spray tan a pleasant experience you need to be clear about the darkness you want, and follow the post-treatment protocols to have your tan last. It is best to wear light-fitting clothing so your color will not rub off. Avoid exercising for a day and try to put off showers until the next morning or your "tan" may wash away. We cannot refund for a spray tan if post-treatment protocols were not followed or you wait to complain till several days or weeks later. Come in right away so we can help you understand your results.

Even with adequate protection of a physical sun-block, there are many options available here to reduce the ravages of too much sun.
